This free student concert (grade 7th thru 12th) celebrates the global versatility of the Steel Pan and Afro-Brazilian drumming traditions through an exciting mix of musical styles and cultural influences. Audiences will experience everything from traditional Calypso and Samba-Reggae to pop, hip-hop, reggae, and video game music — all reimagined through steel pan orchestra and percussion ensemble performance. Featured selections include music associated with Bob Marley, Elvis Presley, Usher, Enrique Iglesias, and the internationally influential Brazilian percussion group Olodum. Directed by master percussionist and program founder Jason Lee Bruns, the program highlights not only the rich cultural history behind these traditions, but also their continued evolution and ability to connect audiences across generations and musical genres.
